Coatings

HES provides its customers with experienced professionals, recognized leaders in the field of corrosion control through the judicious use of protective coatings and linings technology. Our staff is attuned to the dictates of plant availability and reliability, and is cognizant of capital and maintenance budget realities in today's competitive markets. We can provide specification preparation, failure analysis, and other services to the power, manufacturing and marine industries.

The most recent projects performed by our Coatings Consultant, Mr. George Spires,   include: identifying and helping correct licensing issues at NUSCO's Millstone Point Nuclear Power Station; final phase specification preparation, contractor evaluation and bid review for the repainting of the TMPA's Gibbons Creek Station; and application inspection services for the LCRA at their Buchanan Dam.Among the recent projects performed by Mr. Spires include inspector training for nuclear facilities, co-authorship of the EPRI Guidelines for Nuclear Safety-Related Painting Projects, expert witness testimony, and specification preparation and review for plant-wide coating replacement at a steam electric station.

Mr. Spires Past Projects:

Pennsylvania Power & Light Company - Provided Resident engineering, QC and inspection of the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station (SSES) Unit #1 RBCCW-HX coating and the rubber lining repair of several of the Unit #2 condensate polishers. We have provided written procedures and specifications for rubber linings in condensate demineralizers and polishers at SSES, have designed testing programs for candidate rubbers, have performed inspection of coal tar epoxy on the circ-water system, and have assisted in rewriting and updating the maintenance painting specifications used at SSES.

Potomac Electric Power Company - Worked extensively with PEPCO. The most recent work includes coating manufacturer audits and field QC for the relining of the Morgantown Station Unit 1 waterboxes, evaluation of the PVC secondary containment basin liner at the Morgantown Station tanker unloading facility, and inspection of the internal rubber lining of the waterboxes and discharge spools of Unit 3 at PEPCO's Chalk Point Station.

Lower Colorado River Authority - Performed engineering and related services pursuant to LCRA's Fayette and Gideon Plants. This work has included devising specifications and procedures for the maintenance painting program, as well as creation of a schedule for implementation of maintenance painting projects. Other work performed in conjunction with this has been review and analysis of bids submitted by candidate contractors, as well as evaluation of candidate coating systems.

Pacific Gas & Electric Company - Performed inspection of and prepared specifications for the coating of condenser tubesheets at PG&E's Diablo Canyon Station.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Performed inspection of failed coatings on two locks and dams and provided recommendations for the refurbishment of the failed coatings.Because we provide engineering and consultation rather than materials or services, our work tends more to be impacted by a project's schedule than it does to impact that schedule. The schedule of the Contractor determines when inspection and/or QC is to be performed.
